The roots
The roots of Abrus precatorius is useful for the treatment of jaundice and bile haemoglobinuria. Seeds
Seeds have insecticide and antimicrobial, abortifacient, anodyne, aphrodisiac, antimicrobial, diuretic, emetic, expectorant, emollient, febrifuge, hemostat, laxative, purgative, refrigerant, sedative, vermifuge, antidote and used in various ailments to cure headache, snakebite, blennorrhagia, boil, cancer, colds, colic, conjunctivitis, convulsion, cough, diarrhoea, fever, gastritis, gonorrhoea, jaundice, malaria, night-blindness, ophthalmia, rheumatism, diabetes and chronic nephritis, Ethanol-water extract of the aerial parts of A. precatorius at a dose of 250 mg/kg was shown to reduce 30% blood sugar level. Aphrodisiac, malaria, tuberculosis and painful swellings, purgative, emetic, tonic, antiphlogistic, aphrodisiac and anti ophthalmic, epilepsy. Antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, analgesic, anti inflammatory, antispasmodic, antidiabetic, antiserotonergic, antimigraine, abortifacient. Acts as a bronchodilator. Asthma. Platelet
inhibiting activities attributed to abu quinones had been observed. Antifertility, decreased sperm motility and altered sperm morphology in epididymis, antiestrogenic; antiepileptic; nephroprotective; immunomodulator, immunostimulatory; insecticidal; antiviral, antidepressant; anti-oxidative; cytotoxic; neuroprotective; diuretic, antimalarial, which is attributed to hydroquinone, an isoflavone quinone, isolated from the extract of aerial parts. Other pharmacological activities exhibited include antiallergic and anticataract antihelminthic.
Dried seed powders are used by various African tribal groups as oral contraceptives.
The anti-microbial effects of Abrus precatorius extracts from leaves, stem and the seed oil were evaluated against some microorganisms namely Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus anginosus, Bacillus subtilis, Corynebacterium spp Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans using the agar well diffusion technique. Among these, Staphylococcus aureus was the most sensitive organism with an MIC of 8μg/ml for the leaf extract. Extract from the stem and seed oil were potent against some of the gram-positive bacteria and Candida albicans but not against S. anginosus, E. faecalis and some
gram-negative bacteria. The presence of flavonoids, alkaloids and saponins in the methanolic extract may be responsible for the antibacterial and antifungal activity. Antimicrobial activity of Abrus precatorius seed methanol extract was investigated against ten bacterial species. The extract exhibited antibacterial activity towards almost all the bacterial microorganisms.
