Aconitum Cammarum
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!cammarum, Linn. (includes A. neomontana, Willd.; A. intermedium, D. C., and A. stocksianum, Reich.). N. O. Ranunculaceae. Tincture of root.
The genus Aconitum worldwide is notorious for complex patterns of morphologic intergradation that blur the lines between taxa. Aconites from different regions may be morphologically distinct but connected by a series of intermediate races.
There have been huge differences of opinion between botanists as to how to define a species in this genus, with the Flora of N. America recognizing around 100 species worldwide.
whilst the Flora of China recognizes 211 species in China alone and around 400 species worldwide.
We are following the proposed treatment in the ‘World Checklist of Selected Plant Families’, which is still under review, but currently (2016) recognizes about 320 distinct species (391 including hybrids and infraspecific forms) and over 1,000 synonyms.
General Information
Aconitum cammarum is a herbaceous perennial plant with a stem around 100cm tall from an oblong tuber.
The plant used to be a main source of Aconite root for extraction of alkaloids in western Medicine. It has long been cultivated as an ornamental in gardens.
Known Hazards
The aconites have been of interest since ancient times because they contain diterpene alkaloids that range from relatively non toxic to deadly poisonous. In various parts of the world they have been used medicinally and as a source of poisons throughout history.
The use of Aconitum alkaloids in allopathic/Western medicine was largely discontinued by the late 1930’s and early 1940’s because of insufficient knowledge about how to use it safely, though in Homeopathic medicines the seeds, leaves and the roots are still widely used world wide.
Aconitum Cammarum grows best in a moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade, succeeding in full sun so long as the soil does not become dry and inhibiting the growth of nearby species, especially legumes.
Medicinal of Aconitum Cammarum
The root has been important in medicine, where it has been used for the preparation of Extractum Aconiti.
In Reichenbach’s opinion, this is the only species of Aconitum for which there are exact medicinal data.
Extracts of the Aconitum species have been used orally in traditional medicine to reduce fever associated with colds, pneumonia, laryngitis, croup, and asthma; and for their analgesic, anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, diuretic, diaphoretic (cause sweating), cardiac depressant (slow heart rate), headache with vertigo and tinnitus. Cataleptic symptoms. Formication of tongue, lips and face and sedative properties.
In traditional Asian medicine, root extracts are typically mixed with other ingredients, such as licorice or ginger.
Characteristics. The main symptoms, of Aconitine are reproduced in A. camm. Formication begins on tongue and lips and spreads to face and thence over whole body; with this are distortion of features and dry skin. There is headache better by bending body forward; and face ache accompanied by tinnitus aurium and vertigo. Walking causes weariness and, if continued, causes pains in elbows, knees, and hips. Violent eructation; inclination to vomit without vomiting; spasmodic contraction of stomach and abdominal muscles, sensation of something crawling on abdomen.
Clinical. In Homeopathy the plant is used to treat Catalepsy. Eruption. Headache. Neuralgia. Night emissions. Salivation. Tongue paralysis, Taste buds paralyzation (can not feel any taste) Salivation, Vomiting, Fears, phobias, weak memory, Bad blood circulation in upper half of the body especially face, Facial contraction, facial swelling, Fuzzy or crawling sensation on face, Photophobia (sensitiveness to light). Erections and pollutions without voluptuous dreams. On lower extremities small papules and vesicles, filled with serous fluid, very painful. Memory weakened; sense of touch diminished.
Peculiar sharp taste followed by violent shooting pains from lips to stomach. The eructation and rumbling in bowels of the alkaloid were reproduced, but in addition the mucous membrane of the mouth was red, studded with small whitish yellow vesicles surrounded with bright red areola; salivation came on.
Pupils dilated; vision dim; unable to look at highly illuminated objects without winking; near and distant objects seem to swim. Extreme restlessness; it seems as if it were a tickling which impels him to constant movement worse in equable temperature, while better on entering warm air from cold and vice versa. Apathetic, indifferent to all the world. Sleep disturbed or impossible. Vomiting will worse all symptoms.
Main Symptoms are
- Mind: Rage, Fear, Apathy and indifference, Thought and power of concentration disturbed, Memory weak.
- Face: Blackish blue color of face (cyanosis); blue (synotic) swollen lips. Most remarkable sensation of contraction of face.
- Mouth: Paralysis of tongue, Salivation, Fuzzy sensation where the crawling was, Taste and sensation diminished.
- Abdomen: Burning in abdomen and sensation of ants crawling around in it.
- Respiratory Organs: Voice hoarse and rough, Respiration slow, difficult, with sensation as if chest and throat constricted.
- Heart: Pulse frequent; afterwards depressed; slow; irregular; intermittent.
- Generalities: Subsultus tendinum. Twitching, Catalepsy.
