Aconitum Ferox also known as Aconitum virorum and Aconitum Napellus.

Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!

The most poisonous species known, containing greatest proportion of Aconitine; from the Himalaya Mountains, from the family of Ranunculaceae.

Common names are: Aconite tuber, Aconitum Napellus, Aconitum Carmichaelii Debeaux, and Aconitum kusnezoffii Rchb, monkshood, friar’s cap, helmet flower, soldier’s cap, wolfsbane, devil’s helmet, blue rocket, leopard’s bane, chuanwu, caowu, wutou, futzu, and bushi.

Aconitum ferox forms the principal source of the poison known variously as sweet poison (Pakistan), bikh, bish, and nabee (Tamil Nadu).

The species is native to the eastern Himalayas in Pakistan from Swat velly, Kashmer, kaghan, Naraan, Hazaara to central Nepal eastward through the north of West Bengal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh and Assam at altitudes of 2,100-3,600m; the flowering period is from August to October.

It contains large quantities of the extremely toxic alkaloid “pseudaconitine” also known as “nepaline” (after Nepal) and is considered to be the most poisonous plant found in the Himalaya and one of the most poisonous in the world.

The symptoms of poisoning usually appear 45 minutes to an hour after the consumption of a toxic dose and consist of numbness of the mouth and throat and vomiting. Respiration slows, with blood pressure falling synchronously, while the heart rate slows to 30-40 beats per minute. Consciousness characteristically remains unclouded until the end, which consists usually of death by asphyxiation, although occasionally of death due to cardiac arrest.

Clinical.-Burning pains. Cheyne-Stokes breathing. Chill. Dyspnoea. Gastralgia. Neuralgia. Numbness.

Characteristics:

Aconitum ferox was proved by Dworzack, who also proved Aconitine. used as an analgesic for the relief of chronic pain. Other properties attributed to the plant are those of being sudorific, diuretic, expectorant and antipyretic, while diseases and conditions in the treatment of which it has been employed include diabetes mellitus, asthma, ear infections, nasal infections, leprosy, paralysis and arthritis.

The Ferox developed burning pains in greater intensity than the alkaloid; more intense mental activity followed by greater depression. The Aconite note of endurability of suffering is marked. Anxiety and fear of suffocation from paralysis of respiratory muscles; obliged to breathe half-sitting up with head resting on palms of hands.

Relations Compare: Curare and Phosph. (respiratory paralysis; Cheyne-Stokes breathing).

Symptoms of Aconitum Ferox.

  1. Mind very active; sequence of ideas rapid; talked constantly, remembered easily the minutest circumstances of his former experiment, compared them with present one, and readily drew conclusions (upto 6 hours). In intervals of relief from distressing symptoms laughed and joked about his very comical condition; but when the dyspnoea, anxiety, returned, he could not seem to endure them, and abused heartily Aconite and toxicology in general (from 4 to 6 hours). Incapable of any mental work, even the simplest addition; comprehension and understanding confused (2nd day), dull sensation in head.
  2. Mouth: Tongue almost insensible; feels like a piece of raw leather in mouth (upto 6 hours). Tongue covered with a thick yellowish-white fur. Violent burning in mouth (in two minutes), renewed by eating (2nd day); worse by drinking cold water.
  3. Throat: Violent burning in pharynx.
  4. Stomach: Pressure in stomach with pain, warmth in stomach. 8. Respiratory Organs:Dyspnoea increased to such a degree that he was obliged to breathe half-sitting up, with head resting on palms of hands; constantly feared suffocation from respiratory paralysis.
  9. Limbs: Gait tottering; remarkable weakness in lower extremities, especially right side.
  10. Generalities: Formication spread over whole body, least noticeable on parts that had been cold; immediately on lying down. Numbed sensation, as if had wearing gloves; on pinching cheeks no pain felt; seemed to walk on woollen carpets (2nd, 3rd, and 4th day).

  12. Fever: Icy coldness of body (upt 4 hours), objective and subjective, no amount of wraps and external warmth relieved even if sit near stove. Fierce heat (calor mordax) on forehead, cheek, and hands, with sensation as if numerous glowing hot wires were stuck into him and this symptom worse by perspiration (from 4 to 6 hours).

Medicinal Use of Aconitum Ferox in different diseasesAconitum-Ferox-dr-qaisar-ahmed-dixe-cosmetic

Usage of extracts from this plant can be broadly classified as external and internal. Extracts also have been used as arrow poisons.

Historically, aconite was most commonly used in Western cultures as a tincture. It was applied topically as a counterirritant liniment for neuralgia, rheumatism, and sciatica. In homeopathy, aconite is used to treat fear, anxiety, and restlessness; acute sudden fever; symptoms from exposure to dry, cold weather or very hot weather; tingling, coldness, and numbness; influenza or colds with congestion; and heavy, pulsating headaches.

Externally, it is good as anti-inflammatory and effective in reducing pain.

Its internal effects are:

1. Nervous system

It tingles the ‘sensory’ nerve fibres, more specifically their tips, on being massaged in along with some oil. These nerve fibres become numb and pain is reduced. The reactive agents are delivered through the mucous membrane.

There is little or no effect of the extract on the brain. However, it does affect the ‘motor’ nervous system as well. Therefore, it becomes effective vasoconstrictor. It can be used on Vagus as well as the respiratory system.

2. Respiratory system

Acts best on lower respiratory system, especially in asthma, pneumonitis, pleurisy, bronchitis, Corona, SARS.

3. Urinary system

Acts as diuretic. It is also used to dissolve/brake urinary calculi.

4. Digestive system

In 3x, 6x, 30x and 200 Aconitum Ferox is used as Hepato-stimulant, Gastric secretions reduction, Pain relief, and Appetizer.

5. Cardiovascular system

Aconitum ferox is used to treat oedemas, hypertension (dueto anxiety, respiratory malfunction/infection, hepatic weakness, gastric malfunctioning), tachycardia, bradycardia.

6. Reproductive system

Amenorrhea due to anxiety/depression, malnutrition due to gastric/duodenal malfunctioning.

Extract from Aconitum ferox is a good medication only when it is processed and administered in low concentrations that is in high doses (homeopathically), said Dr Qaisar Ahmed MD, DHMS.

Self medication is to be strictly avoided, especially since the consequences can be fatal.
