Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common type of thyroid health problem.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease. It occurs when our body makes antibodies that attack the cells in our own thyroid. The thyroid then can’t make enough of the thyroid hormone. Many patients with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis have an underactive thyroid gland. That’s also known as hypothyroidism.
Risk factors for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
Things that may make it more likely to a person for to get Hashimoto’s thyroiditis are:
- Being a woman. Women are about 7 times more likely to have the Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, sometimes begins during pregnancy.
- Middle age. Most cases happen between 40 to 60 years of age. But it has been seen in younger people.
- Heredity. The disease tends to run in families. But no gene has been found that carries it.
- Autoimmune diseases. These health problems raise a person’s risk. Some examples are rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes. Having this type of thyroiditis puts you at higher risk for other autoimmune illnesses.
Symptoms of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
Each person’s symptoms may vary. Symptoms of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis may include:
Goiter
Goiter is an enlargement of thyroid gland. It is not cancer but it can cause problems like pain or trouble with swallowing, breathing or speaking.
Hypothyroidism or Underactive thyroid
When our thyroid doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone, it can cause these symptoms:
- Tiredness
- Muscle weakness
- Weight gain
- Being cold bothers you
- Depression
- Hair and skin changes
Hyperthyroidism or Overactive thyroid
When the thyroid is attacked by antibodies, it may at first make more thyroid hormone. This is called Hashitoxicosis. It does not happen to everyone. But it can cause these symptoms:
These symptoms may look like other health problems, differentiate from other diseases is very important for best treatment results, said Dr Qaisar Ahmed.
Diagnosis of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
A physical exam, and blood tests to measure patient’s thyroid hormone levels and check for some antibodies to proteins in the thyroid.
Allopathic treatment for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
A good healthcare provider will figure out the best treatment for his Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis patient based on:
- Patient’s age, overall health, and medical history.
- Stage and severity.
- How well patient can handle certain medicines, treatments, or therapies (because of too many side effects).
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis often looks like an underactive thyroid gland. The medicine replaces lost thyroid hormone. That should stop patients symptoms and goiter (but remember the abnormality is still persist and could be damage patient’s overall health).
Hypothyroidism associated with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is treated with a synthetic hormone called levothyroxine (T4 hormone replacement therapy) or sometimes combination of T3 and T4 (Cytomel). The treatment goal is to restore and maintain adequate T4 hormone levels and improve symptoms of hypothyroidism. Patient will need this treatment for the rest of life.
Side effects of T3 hormone replacement include rapid heartbeat, insomnia and anxiety.
These treatments may be tested with a trial period of 3 to 6 months.
T3 and T4 hormones derived from pigs or other animals are available as prescriptions or as dietary supplements, such as Armour Thyroid. Concerns about these products include the following:
- The balance of T4 and T3 in animals isn’t the same as in humans.
- The exact amount of T4 and T3 in each batch of a natural extract product can vary, leading to unpredictable levels of these hormones in patient’s blood.
Precautions and side effects
Too much thyroid hormone can worsen bone loss that causes weak, brittle bones (osteoporosis) or cause irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias).
Effects of other substances
Certain allopathic medications, supplements and foods may affect one’s ability to absorb levothyroxine. It may be necessary to take levothyroxine at least four hours before these substances for example:
- Soy products.
- High-fiber foods.
- Allopathic iron supplements, including multivitamins that contain iron.
- Cholestyramine (an allopathic medication used to lower blood cholesterol levels).
- Aluminum hydroxide, which is found in many antacids and in allopathic supplements.
- Sucralfate (an allopathic ulcer medicine).
- Calcium supplements.
Say your patient to immediate contact if there is/are any of his/her symptoms get worse or have new symptoms.
