A hump behind the shoulders, also called a buffalo hump, can develop when fat gathers together behind your neck. This condition is not necessarily serious.

What causes a Hump Behind the Shoulders?
A hump behind the shoulders can be caused by a medical condition or by medication.
It may form due to:
- a side effect of a prescription medication (such as those used to treat obesity
- Cushing’s syndrome (a rare condition where the body has too much of the hormone cortisol)
- osteoporosis (a condition that leads to thin bones)
- long-term steroid use
Osteoporosis, also called brittle bone disease, results in abnormally thin bones. Menopausal women and older adults are at greatest risk for this condition. This is because their bodies have a decreased ability to absorb calcium.
Osteoporosis can cause bone deformities. If you have this condition, your spine can become curved, which gives a hump-like appearance. This is called kyphoscoliosis.
A hump on the back is also a characteristic sign of Cushing’s syndrome. This disorder causes obesity above the waist, acne, chronic pain, irregular menstrual cycles, and changes in sex drive. Along with other muscle and bone changes, such as thinning bones and weak muscles, Cushing’s syndrome causes fat to gather behind the neck.
Allopathic treatment for Hump Behind the Shoulders
It’s best to treat the hump by addressing the underlying condition that caused it. In some cases, cosmetic surgery can remove the fat deposit. However, unless the cause is also treated, the hump may return.
If the hump is a side effect of a prescription medication, talk to your doctor about changing your dosage or switching treatments. Never stop taking a prescribed medication without your doctor’s permission.

Complications

1- Calcarea Carbonica
It is the most common homeopathic medicine for fats deposits anywhere in the body and for weight loss. Calcarea Carbonicum patients are FAT, FAIR AND FLABBY. Increased general and local perspiration and swelling of glands, scrofulous and rachitic conditions; it normalize bone structure and increase bone density. 3- Ammonium Muriaticum
Ammonium Muriaticum suited to those who are fat and sluggish and with large buttocks, fatty tumors and thin legs. All mucus secretions are increased and retained. Generally suffering from respiratory troubles and associated affections of liver. Obstinate constipation accompanied by much flatus. Hard, crumbling stools require great effort in expulsion; crumble from the verge of anus.
4- Thyroidinum
Thyroid malfunctioning produces anemia, emaciation, muscular weakness, hyper sweating, tingling and increased heart rate. It exerts great influence over goiter, neck and excessive obesity. Acts best in females with paleness and uterine fibroids or mammary tumors.
5- Antimonium crudum
Fat deposits in young people with excessive irritability and frightfulness, with a thick white coated tongue. All the conditions aggravate by heat and cold bathing. Old people with morning diarrhea suddenly become constipated or alternate diarrhea and constipation, pulse hard and rapid, Sensitive to cold (After taking cold. Child is frightful, peevish, cannot bear to be touched or looked at, sulky, and does not wish to speak or be spoken to, angry at every little attention).
Great sadness, with weeping. Likes acidic/sour foods and pickles. Almost always has gastric and intestinal problems (diseases) which aggravates from bread, pastry (bakery), acidic/sour food, especially vinegar, sour or bad wine, after cold bathing, over-heating, hot weather.
Better – In open air, during rest, after a warm bath.
6- Graphites
Tendency to obesity in females with delayed menstruation. The patients are stout, of fair complexion and tendency to skin diseases and constipation, fat, fats tumors, chilly and costive. Take cold easily, swollen neck and genitals with indurations of tissues.
7- Phytollaca
An important Homeopathic medicine for fats in different parts of body. Reduces fat and false growths. It is per-eminently a glandular remedy with glandular swellings –heat and inflammations. It is useful in rheumatism of syphilitic origin where the pains are wandering, shifting and shooting. Burning in throat as from coal fire and cannot swallow hot liquids.
General soreness, lameness, bruised feeling over whole body causes the patient to groan. Intense prostration, sitting upright makes him faint and dizzy.
8- Fucus
A good remedy for obesity, non-toxic goiter (also exophthalmic) and fat deposits in form of tumors. Digestion and flatulence, Obstinate constipation. Thyroid enlargement.
9- Calcarea Arsenicum
Fat patients especially women with climacteric or approaching menopause. Chilliness with dropsical affections, uterine cancers, affections of spleen and mesenteric glands are often found associated. Great depression, anxiety, the slightest emotion causes tachycardia and/or bradycardia. Fatty deposits in like tumors in small areas in different parts of body.
10- Capsicum
Suits nicely those people with lax fibers, weak, diminished vital heat, fat/obese, indolent and have no vital heat or no reactive force. General uncleanliness of body and opposed to physical exertion. Burning pains and general chilliness with marked tendency to suppuration in every inflammatory process.
11- Phosphorus
Persons of waxy, translucent skin, fair skin, large humpy neck, sanguine temperament, delicate eyelashes, find blond or red hair, anemic, young kids growing too rapidly, fair, blondes, quick and hemorrhagic diathesis, quick perceptions, and very sensitive to nature. old people with morning diarrhea. Hemorrhagic diathesis; small wounds bleed profusely from every mucous outlet.
Likes cold food and drinks, juicy, refreshing things, ice cream and all these thing makes gastric problems pains to him/her.
As soon as water becomes warm in stomach it is thrown up.
Worse – Evening, before midnight, lying on left or painful side; during a thunderstorm; weather changes, either hot or cold.
Cold air relieves the head and face symptoms but aggravates those of chest, throat and neck.
Better – In the dark; lying on right side; from being rubbed or mesmerized; from cold food, cold water, until it gets warm in stomach.
12- Lac Defloratum
Useful in obesity with faulty nutrition, unhealthy food. Hump between shoulders. Sick headaches with intense throbbing, nausea and vomiting; prostration and all complaints aggravated during menses.
13- Kali Bichromicum
It is specially indicated for fleshy, puffy necked, fat, light haired complexioned people with scrofulous or syphilitic history. Symptoms tend to increase in the morning and all pains migrate quickly with rheumatic and gastric symptoms alternating. Catarrhal stage of all mucus membranes.
14- Pulsatilla
It is per-eminently a female remedy with tendency to obesity in mild, gentle, yielding females who are sad, cry easily and weeps when talking, patient seeks and likes open air where she/he feels better, cold air or cool room, eating or drinking cold things; cold applications.
Thirst less and chilliness in fat females, Aversion to fatty foods and still grows obese especially upper half trunk. Adapted to persons of indecisive, slow, phlegmatic temperament; sandy hair, pale face, easily moved to laughter or tears; affectionate, mild, gentle, timid, Weeps easily (impossible to detail her ailments without weeping), scanty and protracted menstruation.
Problems/diseases/symptoms worse warm close room; to evening, at twilight; on beginning to move; lying on the left, or on the painless side; with very fatty, indigestible food; pressure on the well side if it be made toward the diseased side; warm applications; heat.
15- Sepia
Obesity in females with weakness, yellow complexion and bearing down sensations. Pains extend down to back and patient chills easily. Obesity in menopausal females with hot flushes and perspiration.
Particularly sensitive to cold air, “chills so easily;” lack of vital heat, especially in chronic diseases.
Anxiety: with fear, flushes of heat over face and head; about real or imaginary friends; with uterine troubles.
Great sadness and weeping. Dread of being alone; of men; of meeting friends; with uterine troubles.
Indifferent: even to own family; to occupation, to loved ones. Greedy, miserly.
Worse In afternoon or evening; from cold air or dry east wind; sexual excesses; at rest; sultry moist weather; before a thunderstorm.
Better – Warmth of bed, hot applications; violent exercise.
16- Senega
Especially suited for persons of lax fibers who tend to become obese and also to children who are chubby in appearance. These children usually suffer from repeated respiratory catarrhal affections where rattling cough and profuse mucus but difficult raising are characteristics.
17- Natrum Mur
Watery, bloated face; they are tired and sleepy and inclined to weep. They are chilly, suffer from cold extremities, and have a sensation of cold along the spine. Disturbances in the distribution of salt in the cells cause: Lachrymation; Fatty tumors; salivation; toothache with salivation; watery diarrheas; mucous diarrheas; lack of mucus; catarrh of stomach with vomiting of mucus; water-brash; vesicles clear as water on skin or conjunctiva; constipation.
18- Lycopodium
Traction and contraction from the nape of the neck to the occiput. Rigidity of the nape of the neck, sometimes caused by lifting a weight. Maculae hepatica in the nape of the neck. Hump. Titters on nape of neck and under armpits. Furunculi under armpits. Stiffness, swelling, and induration of one side of neck. Painful stiffness of left side of neck. Burning as of red-hot coals between scapulae. Swelling of glands of neck and of the shoulder, with shooting pain. Weakness and paralysis of muscles of neck. Painful eruption on neck. Large clusters of red pimples around neck, with violent itching.
19- Antimonium Crudum
Cramp-like drawing in the muscles of the neck and of the nape of the neck. Rheumatic pains in the nape of the neck. Miliary eruption on the nape of the neck, in the shoulder-blades, and behind the ears. Humps between shoulders.
20- Nux Vomica
Pulling pain as from a bruise, rigidity, and sensation of heaviness in nape of neck. Swelling of muscles of neck, with pain as if they were too short. Hump. Cervico-brachial neuralgia, neck stiff. Pains, like those of a bruise, in back and loins, with sensation of weakness in those parts, as after childbirth (also after difficult parturition). Pain as if bruised in the small of the back and back so violent that he cannot move.
21- Ignatia along Natrum Mur :
When depression has lead to obesity and excess weight gain.
Ignatia works effectively to decrease the weight when depression is the cause. Humps on neck. Upper half trunk puffed.
