Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Men can get yeast infections too, which can lead to a condition known as balanitis (inflammation of the head of the penis). Balanitis is more common in non Muslims (uncircumcised men).

- Areas of shiny, white skin on the penis.
- Redness, itching or a burning sensation on the penis.
Causes of develop balanitis from a yeast infection:
- Uncircumcised (Non Muslims)

- Have diabetes
- Impaired immune system, such as with HIV
- Overweight/Obesity
- Poor hygiene
Types of yeast infection in men and women:
Candida:
Candida (the fungus that causes yeast infections) is normally present on skin, especially moist skin and in the urethra.
It commonly occurs as a superficial infection or on mucous membranes in the mouth, skin (penis), urethra and/or vagina.
Candida is the name given to a specific condition when there is an overgrowth of the yeast Candida albicans in the body. This yeast is normally present in the body as a healthy microorganism of the intestinal tract, but when conditions are out of balance overgrowth can occur.
Candida is ranked as one of the most common groups of organisms that cause nosocomial infections (hospital borne infections).
Commonly affect immune-compromised individuals diagnosed with serious diseases such as HIV and cancer or individuals that have recently undergone surgery, a transplant or are in the Intensive Care Unit.
These patients predominantly develop oropharyngeal or thrush candidiasis, which can lead to malnutrition and interfere with the absorption of medication and in results candida spreads to the other organs too.
Vaginal Candidiasis:
Vaginal candidiasis is also more commonly known as a vaginal yeast infection. It is caused by the fungi candida, which is normally present in the vagina in a small amount. It causes vaginal candidiasis when it grows to an abnormal amount.
The infection tends to develop as a result of a weak immune system, intake of contraceptives, infected partner, uncontrolled diabetes and use of extensive antibiotics.
The symptoms of vaginal candidiasis include itching, burning, irritation, redness, and swelling in the vagina along with a thick white discharge (which looks like cottage cheese). A burning sensation in the vagina during intercourse and urination is also present.
Tinea Cruris:
Tinea Cuis is a ringworm infection on the skin of the groin area.
Tinea cruris is a contagious infection that spreads from direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or from use of objects carrying the fungal infection, like towels, clothes, etc.
The skin lesion developed as a result of tinea cruris is a red rash that forms on the groin area, inner thighs, genitals, and buttocks. Small blisters may appear along the margins of the rash. Itching, pain and burning in the lesions along with flakiness and cracks may also be present.
Tinea Barbae:
Ringworm infection of the beard, mustache area of the face and the neck and groin areas, is called tinea barbae.
This infection is usually contracted through contact with an infected animal. A human to human transmission is rare.
Sharing articles of personal use, like shaving razors, towels with an infected person transmits the infection.
The symptoms of tinea barbae include pimples, pustules, swelling, and redness of the infected area. Oozing of fluid, pus or blood, itching and pain in the lesions and crusting of the infected area may be present.
Diaper rash:
A red rash that develops on the buttocks of a baby due to use of diapers is known as a diaper rash, buy it is not specific for babies as elder person also can be affected.
There are many reasons for a diaper rash, but a candida infection is one of the most common reasons. The warm and moist areas between a diaper or undergarment and a patient’s skin serve as a favorable environment for the growth of fungi.
The symptoms of a diaper rash include a raised rash on the skin of the buttocks, thighs and genital area. This yeast infection in men and kids too is painful and tender to touch and gets worse on washing. Other skin eruptions like pimples, blisters or pustules can also appear on the rash.
Causes
The fungus candida albicans is responsible for most vaginal yeast infections; Yeast infections caused by other types of candida fungus can be more difficult to treat, and generally need more-aggressive therapies. Vagina naturally contains a balanced mix of yeast, including candida, and bacteria. Certain bacteria (lactobacillus) act to prevent an overgrowth of yeast. But that balance can be disrupted. An overgrowth of candida or penetration of the fungus into deeper vaginal cell layers causes the signs and symptoms of a yeast infection.
Overgrowth of yeast can result from:
- Antibiotic use, which causes an imbalance in natural vaginal flora
- Pregnancy (higher estrogen levels).
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- An impaired immune system (such as from corticosteroid, immunosuppressant therapy or HIV infection etc).
- Taking oral contraceptives or hormone therapy that increase estrogen levels.
Certain lifestyle risk factors also increase risk of a vaginal yeast infection, such as:
- Sitting in a wet bathing suit.
- Not changing out of sweaty clothes.
- Wearing scented tampons or using a vaginal deodorant.
Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection
Symptoms of a yeast infection are similar to the symptoms of sexually transmitted infection (STI), therefore it’s important to distinguished STDs from STI.
There are several signs of a vaginal yeast infection for example:
- An itchy or burning sensation in prepuce or vagina and vulva.
- A thick, white discharge with the consistency like cottage cheese.
- Redness and swelling of penis, scrotum, vagina and vulva.
- Small cuts or tiny cracks in the skin because of fragile skin in the area.
- A burning urination (micturition).
- Pain during sex.
Diagnosis
Doctor should need to take a sample of discharge from vagina or penis to confirm a yeast infection. The combination of symptoms and the discharge sample will tell us what type of yeast infection patient have and how to treat it.
Allopathic treatment for yeast infection
Allopathic antifungal medications treat most yeast infections. The specific medication depends on the severity of the infection.
Antifungal medications work by fighting yeast overgrowth in the body. There are two ways to treat an uncomplicated yeast infection: local therapy or oral treatment. Oral therapy usually given in one dose of fluconazole by mouth, or topical (used daily for up to seven days). (apply topical medications to penis/vaginal area or place them inside the vagina {suppository} using an applicator).
Over-the-counter (OTC) medication, such as:
- butoconazole.
- clotrimazole.
- miconazole.
- terconazole.
Alternatively, an oral antifungal such as fluconazole can be used in one single dose for both men and women.
Patient shouldn’t have sex until he/she finished with treatment (Sex will cause more irritation).
Complicated yeast infection
In the case of a complicated yeast infection, treatment will include the use of long-course therapy or multi dose (3-6) oral fluconazole along with maintenance medications. A person might take these drugs regularly to prevent the infection from returning.
Maintenance medications are necessary when one of the above methods of treatment has finished. It may include weekly treatment with oral fluconazole for 6 months or weekly treatment with vaginal clotrimazole.
Long-course therapy includes treatment with a topical/vaginal cream, ointment, tablet, or suppository for not less than seven days.
If symptoms are severe, prescribe a few days of topical steroids to help ease symptoms while the antifungal medication works.
P.S: The overuse of antifungals can increase the chances of yeast resistance, so these allopathic medications may not work in the future when they are needed.
If the person’s sexual partner even has no any yeast symptoms, they should take precautionary treatment (single dose of fluconazole).
Many doctors in Europe strongly recommends alternative therapies for the treatment of yeast infections.
